Explanation of the Title: Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 86

(Last week we ended with, “The person is the practice of giving object; you need not be attached. The phenomenon is precisely to have no attachment to money. The person and all phenomena, you cannot have attachment, then your mind will truly be purified of defiling illusion. This way is called the practice of giving in wealth.”)

 

After the practice of giving in wealth, then is the practice of giving in Buddha teaching. As the name implies, Buddha teaching is just and honorable. The practice of giving in Buddha teaching in the School of Buddhism talks about:

  1. Explaining the Sutra and expound teaching;
  2. By means of the family of Buddhism’s theory and methods to enlighten all beings;
  3. According to circumstances to transform all beings by instruction.

The practice of giving in wealth, the practice of giving in Buddha teaching, the practice of giving in fearlessness is all considered the practice of giving in Buddha teaching – the wisdom-life practice of giving and the life practice of giving. Maybe you helped him in one sentence, or maybe you helped him in one verse of Sutra, or maybe you helped him with just an action, or a look, or a landscape; this thing is inconceivable!

In the Chapter of Universal (Unlimited) Door, Guan-yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara) mentioned that:

Corresponding to whatever form to obtain help, I will manifest in that form to help.

 Still there is more than using the infinite body, languages, sounds, ideas, or perceptual objects, no one is left out to help one especially the beings of the Three Wretched Worlds – animals, hungry ghosts and hells. Our human world is bittersweet, it is about the same, now people are very troublesome. Guan-Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara) comes to our world to help us.

How does she help?

How does she use the practice of giving in Buddha teaching?

Very simple, her appearance, and her special respectful title. When we see, her appearance has planted the good root in us. Hearing her respectful title of Guan-Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara) plants the good root in us. Her stories, background, and her statue in the temple, the message of the Buddha’s name conveyed between practitioner bit by bit. Even on the discourse from the scripture:

The energy of Guan-Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara) abides eternally in our Saha Land (our world).

Your mind becomes just a bit purified because you are uniting with her. All are the practice of giving in Buddha teaching.

This practice of giving way, us ordinary people may learn but it is not easy. Why? You do not have the “right understandings and right views”, it is very hard to ferry all beings over.

“Right understandings and right views”, “right” means open and aboveboard, precisely Buddha knowing and Buddha views, exactly the wisdom of enlightenment, enlightenment understanding, enlightenment theory, and the enlightenment method.

If you are not enlightened, that means all is finished. On advising people, not to advise is better because once you persuade while, on the surface shows goodness but the result is bad.  On top of that you still must able to have “firm belief, comprehend with wisdom, implement and realize into the state of nirvana”.

This “firm belief, comprehend with wisdom, implement and realize into the state of nirvana” is very, very important. Why? You must believe yourself is Guan-Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara), and you can help all beings. You must still have faith in Guan-Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara) that she has this ability to help all beings, precisely “confidence in oneself and believe in her”.

Why Guan-Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara)? We all have Buddha-nature, Guan-Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara) manifests the self-nature’s radiance, and self-nature’s infinite mercy and infinite compassion. You must be able to believe this. However, average people have serious inferiority feeling: “How can I compare with Guanyin Bodhisattva? Do not joke around about this.” This is the problem.

Also believe in Guan-Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara).

But some people even do not know the background of Guan-Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara)?

What kind of phenomena?

They do not know; how can they believe?

Having firm belief comes with many kinds:

“Superstition” as worshipping daily, this is superstition. To appeal daily, this is superstition.

“Right believe”, knowing what phenomena of Guan-yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara).

“True faith”, truly believing in the words of Guan-Yin Bodhisattva, you must be able to do it and receive her teaching with conviction and understanding and then truly practice it.  If you can do it, this belief in Guan-Yin Bodhisattva is true. Also, one still needs to believe that yourself can become Guan-Yin Bodhisattva in accordance with Guan-Yin Bodhisattva’s theory and method. Truly believing that the self and Her are one and undivided. Guan-Yin Bodhisattva is me; I am Guan-Yin Bodhisattva.

You have the “right understanding and right view”, then you can help all beings. At a minimum you must be able to “eradicate one grade of the unenlightened condition, to confirm one grade of embodiment of truth (Dharma Body)”. If you have not eradicated the unenlightened condition, it does not work. Why? You are deluded and confused, and erroneously regard illusion as reality. You thought you helped, but the result is the contrary. Why? You have not seen the truth about the universe.

What is the background of all beings?

What was their previous natural capacity?

You do not know; then how can you help them?

(六)  布施波羅蜜

(上星期講到: 人,就是布施的對象,你要不執著。法,就是錢財不執著。人、法你都不能執著,真正心地清淨了,這叫「財布施」。)

「財布施」完了,就「法布施」。顧名思義,「法」,正大光明叫法。

「法布施」,在佛門講是

(一)講經說法;

(二)以佛家的理論方法來開導眾生;

(三) 隨緣教化眾生。

「財布施」也有,「法布施」也有,「無畏布施」也有,都屬「法布施」- 慧命布施、生命布施。也許你就一句話幫了他,也許就一句經文幫了他,也許就一個動作,或者是一個眼神,或者是一段風景,這個事情不可思議!

你看觀音菩薩,《普門品》裡面講:「應以什麼身得渡,即現什麼身渡他」。還不止,以無量 – 身、語言、音聲、思想、境界,沒有一個漏掉,幫助他。尤其是我們惡道眾生,三惡道。我們人間就是苦樂參半,也差不多了,現在人間也很麻煩。

觀音菩薩來我們世間,幫助我們,怎麼幫?

她怎麼用「法布施」?

很簡單,形相,她的形相、她的名號。形相我們看到了,種善根。聽到她的名號觀音菩薩,種善根。她的故事,她的來歷,寺院裡面安放的佛像,同修之間傳達的佛的名號的訊息,點點滴滴。甚至於經典上講,觀音菩薩的能量常住在我們娑婆世界。你心只要清淨一點,就跟她相應。這些布施都是「法布施」。

這布施,我們一般人可以學,但不容易。為什麼不容易?你沒有正知正見,很難渡眾生。

「正知正見」,「正」是光明正大,就是「佛知佛見」 – 就是覺悟的智慧,覺悟的見解,覺悟的理論,覺悟的方法。

如果你自己沒有覺悟,那完了。勸人,不勸還好,一勸,表面上是善,結果是惡。加上你自己還要能「信解行證」。

這「信解行證」,講起來是非常非常重要。為什麼重要?你要信你自己是觀音菩薩,你有能力幫助眾生。你還要信觀音菩薩有這能力幫助眾生,就是「自信、信他」。

為什麼自己是觀音菩薩?我們都有佛性,觀音菩薩是佛性中變現的自性光明、自性大慈大悲。你要能相信這個。一般人自卑感很重,「我怎麼能跟觀音菩薩去比?開玩笑」。就是這個問題。

還要信觀音菩薩。有的人連觀音菩薩什麼來歷?什麼現象?他都不知道;怎麼信?

信又分很多種:

迷信 – 每天拜,這迷信。每天求,是迷信。

「正信」,知道觀音菩薩是怎麼一個現象,是正信。

還有「真信」,真正相信觀音菩薩講的話,你要能去做到,要信受奉行。你要能做到,這是真信觀音菩薩。還要信自己將來按照觀音菩薩的理論、方法,能夠變成觀音菩薩。真正相信「自他不二」,觀音菩薩就是我,我就是觀音菩薩。

你有這樣的正知正見,可以幫助眾生。最低限度,你要能「破一品無明,證一分法身」。如果沒有破無明,沒有辦法。為什麼?迷惑顛倒。以為幫了,結果沒有。為什麼?你沒有看到宇宙真相。

眾生的來歷是什麼,他以前是什麼根器,你不知道,你怎麼幫他?
