Explanation of the Title: Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 95

(Last week we ended with: “Therefore, the school of Buddhism is inseparable from the practice of giving, to perform and spread alms and there is no missing.”)

 

After Ananda (Shakyamuni Buddha’s disciple and assistant) became enlightened at the Assembly of Surangama, he made a statement:

Putting forth my body and mind devotedly to numberless lands, this is known as to repay Buddha’s kindness.

Numberless lands represent the unlimited and boundless world.

Body and mind devotedly to numberless lands, by means of my body and mind to practice of giving for all beings, only then can you repay Buddha’s kindness

Since this is the case, we go to the Bliss World of Amitabha Pure Land to attain Buddha’s enlightenment in perfection to have this realization:

Surpassing tranquil wisdom with absolute control and immovable honored one;

The supreme Surangama Mantra which is rare in the world.

Surpassing tranquil wisdom with absolute control; adding the word “surpassing” means beyond description.

Tranquil wisdom refers to penetration, bright, clean, and without any hindrance.

Absolute control refers to the delicate confirmation that the mind is the Buddha mind in all Buddha Bodhisattva, precisely is the Realization of the eternal peace of nirvana of Buddha’s attainment.

Immovable honored one, refers to the self and others, the “self” means the Dharma body of all Buddha; “others” refers to before one becomes Buddha, one’s self-realizing aspect Buddha-nature has not been attained but there is Buddha-nature. All beings have Buddha-nature, this precisely is Immovable.

Surpassing tranquil wisdom with absolute control and immovable honored one; The supreme Surangama Mantra which is rare in the world.  The rare matter in the world is the Supreme Surangama-Samadhi – “All matters are within the Buddha-nature, which is ultimately inexhaustible, immutable and indestructible; all beings inherently possess”.  We go to the Amitabha Pure Land to realize this.

Having faith in Amitabha and chant (mindfulness) Amitabha, is to comprehend Amitabha Pure Land. To understand:

Chanting Amitabha is the cause and becoming Amitabha is the effect.

Keeping in mind constantly to chant (mindfulness) Amitabha. Last, your experiential entry into the truth of Amitabha Pure Land, into the perfect stage of Buddha realization, and into Surangama (the virtue or power which enables a Buddha to overcome every obstacle).

The four steps of “firm belief, comprehension with wisdom, implement and verify into the state of nirvana”, this is the practice of giving. We take the practice of giving a penny to expand after one becomes Buddha to teach all beings, to lead and return to the Bliss World of Amitabha Pure Land. To teach all beings that:

Chanting Amitabha is the cause and becoming Amitabha is the effect.

To go and be born to the Bliss World of Amitabha Pure Land, is this not what is stated in the Flower Adornment Sutra!

Therefore, Sudhana had gone through his enlightenment quest with 53 enlightened Masters, and the last visit was to Pu-Xian Bodhisattva (Samantabhadra) with his Ten Great Vows to lead and return to Amitabha Pure Land. Only chanting Amitabha to resolve all.

The Flower Adornment Sutra (Avatamsaka) talks about the practice of giving, the Buddha Assembly of Hua-Yan (Avatamsaka), the attendants of the Maha-Bodhisattva of the 10th Stages (from 41st to 50th of the 52 bodhisattva cultivation tiers) and beyond, all go to be born to Amitabha Pure Land which is the practice of giving of Vairocana Buddha to all Mahasattva with Dharma Body. The Dharma Flower Sutra is also the practice of giving of Shakyamuni Buddha to Mahasattva with Dharma Body. Explaining Sutras is the practice of giving. His practice of giving is perfect, entirely without deficiency. Why? He is the state of Buddhahood. His individual self-realizing aspect has attained full marks and has already reached attainment of Tathagata (our original purest condition) – the Realization of Nirvana; this practice of giving is also in perfection.

Therefore, everyone should think about the practice of giving genuinely, by means of the purified mind to encourage others to chant the name of Amitabha, then before we become Buddha is also already in perfection.

However, it depends on the degree of one’s purified mind, either 2 degrees, 3 degrees, 4 degrees, or 5 degrees, it all depends on an individual’s cultivation. Even with only one degree is also pretty good, in this thought moment one has purified of defiling illusion is also not bad. To cultivate the practice of giving, you can do it at any time.

(六)  布施波羅蜜

(上星期講到: 所以佛家基本不離「布施」。「布」是行佈,就是沒有一個地方漏的。「施」是施捨。)

阿難在「楞嚴會」上,開悟以後講:「將此身心奉塵剎,是則名為報佛恩。」

「身心奉塵剎」,「塵剎」代表無量無邊的世界。「身心奉塵剎」,以身心來「布施」給一切眾生,這才能報佛恩。

既然是這樣,我們到極樂世界圓成佛道,證的是「妙湛總持不動尊,首楞嚴王世希有」,就是證這個。

「妙湛總持」加個「妙」- 不可思議。

「湛」是穿透、明好、光潔、沒有障礙。

「總持」,是一切諸佛菩薩微妙「心印」,就是佛果地上的「寂滅忍」。

「不動尊」,自他 – 「自」是一切諸佛之「法身」;「他」是沒有成佛以前佛性「自證分」還沒有證,可是有佛性。一切眾生皆有佛性,這就是「不動」。

「妙湛總持不動尊,首楞嚴王世希有」,世間希有之事是《首楞嚴大定》,一切事究竟堅固,不動不壞,一切眾生皆具有。我們到極樂世界去,就是證這個。

信佛、念佛,了解極樂世界,了解「念佛是因,成佛是果」。念念不忘念佛,最後證入極樂世界,證入圓滿果地,證入《首楞嚴》。

「信解行證」,這是「布施」。我們把「布施」一毛錢,擴大到成佛以後教導一切眾生,導歸極樂世界,教導一切眾生「念佛是因,成佛是果」,往生極樂,這不就是《華嚴經》上講的。

所以善財童子五十三參,最後「普賢十大願」導歸極樂。我們一句佛號就解決了。

《華嚴經》上講的「布施」,華嚴海會一切登地以上大菩薩,往生極樂世界,這是毘盧遮那佛對一切法身大士的「布施」。《妙法蓮華》,這也是釋迦牟尼佛對法身大士的「布施」。講經就是「布施」,他這個「布施」圓滿,完完全全沒有欠缺。為什麼?佛果,「自證分」是滿分,已經到如來果地 – 「寂滅忍」了,這「布施」也是圓滿。

所以各位要想想「真正布施」,以清淨心,勸念彌陀名號,我們沒有成佛以前也圓滿。

不過清淨心看看是多少,二分、三分、四分、五分;那要看個人修行。一分也可以,這一念清淨也可以。修「布施」,隨時修。
