Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 30

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

(Last week we ended, “Prajna is achieved when your mind has learned to become purified of defiling illusion; if you do not learn and merely envy others, that will not work.”)

We have lived this life already to a certain extent, otherwise all of you would not be here to listen to this Sutra explaining. Most people who come here are all looking for methods to resolve their current problems. If everything was smooth in all aspects of one’s life going-between riches and honors, one would not want to achieve enlightenment; fundamentally one does not have this way of thinking. Let us look at government officials – none of them want to become enlightened, they are unlikely.

Why are they unlikely? They are already on a boat with power. Therefore, ancient people said:

Retire at the height of one’s official career, or

Rein in the horse at the edge of the precipice (as reform) before it is too late.

Today if you can understand to have perfect insight is being purified, where at anytime and anyplace your mind is purified and unmoved by any phenomena, then I truly congratulate you. Whether you are making money, or working, or looking after others, or you are all by yourself; your body and mind are in an extremely pleasant state and you are unspeakably happy.

Regarding this, I can let all of you know, I am a person who usually finds amusement in my own way. My way of finding amusement is very different, as I often do not think about what I am thinking. If you think while you are in the middle of enjoyment, then you would feel unwell because you would be afraid to lose this enjoyment.

If by any chance in the future, there was no more enjoyment then what to do?

Am I not done for?

Humans precisely have this problem. All of us are the same as the ordinary unenlightened person, there are no saint.

Who is a saint here?

Saint would not sit here. Everyone is a common person. Therefore, I speak from my own experience.

When you do anything, you need to be single-mindedly devoted and concentrated. But you need to remember, in this moment of concentration you already have no attachment; do not say that you forget about it after you have finished, in the moment while you are doing it you should have already forgotten it.  This is very important. After you finished it, when people praise you after you did a good job, there is no need to be happy also; if people say you did bad, there is also no need to feel sad about it.

Why? Everything is unreal.

You stay together with everyone, it is called finding amusement when the occasion arises, putting up a phony show will do.  If you take things too seriously then I am telling you, you make life difficult for yourself, and you make life difficult for others. This is because while we stay in this society we often say one thing but mean something completely different.

Why? It is because of ego face and fearing that we will offend somebody.

In the dream, there is nothing of this sort. When you say one thing but mean something different, and others act the same way, it is because you are in opposition to each other. But you are not now – you see all living beings entirely as Buddha, then you are at peace. Jesus Christ treated all living beings as “he is all living beings” and “I am him”; he is a kind of education. Therefore, religion nowadays has changed who holds awe and veneration is clearly demarcated. Christians and Buddhists do not get a long like oil and water. I hope all people’s mind needs to purify, need to change and become different. Everything has been caused by man-made attachments and has no connection with the enlightened one. If you want to widen your breadth of mind, it is very simple: you accept all living beings, have no more divide, and no more ideas of I, you, or him; and then you will be happy.
